Allergy Relief Foods

This post was originally published as Allergy-Fighting Foods by Laurel on Health Food blog.

MSN Health & Fitness reports that a simple strategy to alleviate and prevent allergies/asthma is to eat a nutritious diet.  Eating the right foods will help decrease inflammation and open up air passages, thin mucus in the lungs, and prevent food-allergy reactions. Include the following foods in your diet to get allergy relief the natural way:
  • Healthy fats – essential fatty acids have anti-inflammatory benefits.  Try flaxseed oil, salmon, cod, or haddock for a good source of omega-3 fatty acids and evening primrose oil, borage oil, or black currant seed oil for a good source of gamma-linoleic acid (GLA).
  • 100% juices – great source of antioxidants that fight allergies.  Drink a variety of juices and aim for those in glass containers.
  • High-fiber foods – fiber keeps your digestive system and colon healthy while encouraging “good” bacteria growth.  “Good” bacteria create an acidic environment that protects you from “bad” bacteria.  Try whole grains, nuts, and seeds.
  • Yogurt - keeps healthy balance of good and bad bacteria.  Look for all natural brands that say “live active cultures” on the label.
